Our mission aligns with the vision of Amba Estate, located in the picturesque Uva Highlands of Sri Lanka. Amba Estate shares our goal of uplifting living standards and creating educational opportunities for their team members and the local population.
Introduction Amba Estate
Amba Estate is a social enterprise, organic farm, and guest-house located in the stunning Uva Highlands of Sri Lanka. Their primary objective is to maximize local employment and incomes while simultaneously preserving and restoring the natural environment.
In collaboration with the local community, they produce and export a diverse range of artisanal products. Additionally, they provide guests with a unique opportunity to unwind and rejuvenate in one of Sri Lanka’s most breathtaking locations. The estate spans 130 acres of magnificent mountains, waterfalls, caves, forests, and tea fields, offering an idyllic retreat.
A community-run social enterprise
Amba Estate operates as a community-run social enterprise, nestled at an altitude of 1000m, offering breathtaking views of the Ravana-Ella waterfalls in the Uva mountains of Sri Lanka. Their primary objective is to maximize local incomes while preserving the natural environment. Following the motto of “If it grows, turn it into a product!”, they aim to demonstrate to local farmers the value of processing their own produce to create higher-value products.
In addition to handcrafted teas, Amba Estate is renowned for producing a range of artisanal goods. From spices and herbs like cinnamon, lemongrass, cloves, and pepper to coffee, cascara, jams, and chutneys, their products have gained global recognition and are supplied to prestigious establishments worldwide.
During our visit to Amba Estate in 2022, our Dutch team had the privilege of actively participating in tea picking alongside the local employees and enjoying a splendid tour of the estate. This experience allowed us to witness their exceptional work and service-oriented mindset, further reinforcing our support for this tea estate.

Vangedi Pekoe
Crafted using the traditional method employed by estate workers at their homes, this black tea involves pounding the leaves in a stone “vangedi” (mortar) before oxidizing and drying them. Due to its association with workers keeping some leaves for themselves, this technique is prohibited on larger estates. Amba Estate stands as the sole producer of this commercially available tea.
Sumudu Chai
Amba’s Sumudu Chai is a delightful blend of mini-rolled Broken Orange Pekoe infused with organic spices grown on their farm, including cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. The aim was to create a unique Sri Lankan Chai, distinct from the dominant cardamom flavor found in Indian chai. This aromatic tea carries hints of mulled wine and is a perfect choice for a hot chai or an invigorating iced tea.
Blue Lemongrass with Butterfly Pea Flowers
Amba Estate carefully collects and dries the Butterfly Pea flowers, renowned for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. These flowers are then blended with their renowned lemongrass, resulting in a tisane with a citrusy flavor similar to their regular lemongrass and a captivating blue hue. The addition of a few drops of citrus or any acidic element transforms the blue color into a vibrant purple. This refreshing beverage can be enjoyed on its own or used as a base for cocktails and mocktails.
